Let’s Build My School is a UK-based charity committed to providing sustainable, low-cost educational infrastructure in underserved regions of West Africa. Beyond building schools, LBMS places great importance on selecting construction methods that can be learned, transmitted, and replicated by local communities — ensuring that the process contributes to long-term village development even after the charity’s departure. Their approach prioritises lasting, measurable outcomes — from increased school enrolment to the creation of local employment through newly acquired building skills.
Since 2023, Tellure atelier has partnered with LBMS to support its mission through architectural design and material research. The school project in Djilakh, a village in Senegal’s Thiès region, responds to urgent educational needs while serving as a hands-on investigation into sustainable, locally rooted construction. Built using the Nubian Vault technique, the project eliminates the need for metal or timber roofing by forming both walls and roof in earth. This method reduces environmental impact, strengthens climate resilience in the face of heavy seasonal rains, and equips local masons with practical, replicable skills that can continue to benefit the community over time.
